This month, we celebrate the completion of the first part of the infrastructure for the Green Heart of Kenya: the road network. The construction of the roads was launched on 20th March 2022, flagged off by Lachie Gordon, the MD of the company. In a meeting with internal staff, the MD noted that the milestone was important because it signified the start of construction work on a project that is expected to change the landscape of Kilifi.
“I need to be there to witness the start of road construction because of the enormity of the step. It is the start of what we have all worked for and the dream for this project in Kilifi. We want this to be a signature not only locally or regionally but across the continent.”
Apart from providing access to the entire project, the construction of roads helps in creating a footprint for the masterplan and helping visitors and potential homeowners to visualize the project better. Major roads that have been built so far include the road to access the Green Heart Village, a residential development with houses for sale starting from Ksh. 9.5 million for one bedroom houses. This road helps each of the houses, which are sold off-plan, to have not only access to the community space but also easy access to their property and the green belt. The road connecting the rest of the project to the Sanctuary has also been completed. It provides access through the agricultural space and part of the Green Belt to the Sanctuary. It allows access to our serviced plots ranging from half an acre to 1 acree that you can purchase from Ksh. 6 million.
Infrastructure is critical for climate-smart development. Roads that not only provide access but are also made to leave minimal footprint to the soil, flora, and fauna next to them are the piece of modern development upon which carbon-neutral sustainable development projects should be based.
